🎻 Artist Spotlight | Anna McMichael
From the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and London Sinfonietta to Australia’s leading chamber ensembles, violinist Anna McMichael has built a career remarkable for its breadth — moving comfortably from early music to the newest sounds being written today.
After growing up in South Australia, Anna won First Prize in the String Final of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition before a Queen’s Jubilee Scholarship took her to the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague, where she studied with Vera Beths and graduated cum laude.
She remained in Europe for 17 years, performing with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta and London Sinfonietta, as well as leading and performing with contemporary ensembles across Europe and appearing at festivals from Paris and Berlin to Vienna, Rome and Edinburgh.
Since returning to Australia, Anna has performed with ensembles including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian World Orchestra, Pinchgut Opera, Australian Haydn Ensemble and Ensemble Offspring. She is also a core member of early-music specialists Ironwood and Genesis Baroque, and is Classical Convenor and Strings Coordinator at Monash University’s Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance.
There’s another connection that makes Anna particularly at home with us: she knows what makes a regional music festival special. From 2014–2019 she was Co-Artistic Director of the Tyalgum Music Festival, which received national recognition for regional excellence during her tenure.
This November, we’re delighted to welcome Anna McMichael to Albury and to our Ooh là là! Festival ensemble. 🇫🇷🎻

What do the West End, Strictly Come Dancing, a herd of life-sized dinosaurs — and Ooh là là! have in common?
Cameron Wenn.
Not everyone who helps create the magic of the Albury Chamber Music Festival appears on stage.
Cameron is a director and writer whose career has taken him from musical theatre and live broadcast to arena spectaculars and immersive entertainment, with productions seen in more than 30 countries.
His credits include Top Hat — The Musical, working as Associate Director with Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall; Singin’ in the Rain in London and internationally; and I Can’t Sing — The X Factor Musical at the London Palladium. He has also been Writer and Associate Director of the Strictly Come Dancing — Professionals Live UK tour since 2019.
And then there are the dinosaurs.
Cameron was part of the original creative team behind Walking With Dinosaurs — The Arena Spectacular, helping develop the show before taking it around the world and staging productions across more than 100 cities.
This November, Cameron brings that extraordinary theatrical experience to Ooh là là!, joining the Festival team in Creative Production.
With theatrical touches, unexpected moments and more than a little French flair woven through this year’s Festival, Cameron brings a formidable background in creating live experiences that surprise and delight.
And after dinosaurs, surely a little corner of France in Albury should be easy. 🇫🇷

🇫🇷 Artist Spotlight | Shaun Ng
You may need to look twice to work out exactly what Shaun Ng is playing this November.
That very long-necked member of the lute family is a theorbo — an instrument once at home in the courts, theatres and salons of Baroque Europe, and this year it comes to Albury in the hands of a musician with some remarkable early-music credentials.
Shaun is a multi-instrumentalist, researcher and specialist in historical performance, whose musical world encompasses violin, viola, cello, viola da gamba, violone, lute and theorbo. His studies have taken him from the Amsterdam Conservatorium to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the University of Western Australia and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
And there’s a particularly lovely French connection.
Shaun’s recording of the mysterious French composer Le Sieur de Machy’s Pièces de Violle of 1685 earned an extraordinary review from Audiophile Audition, which placed his playing in the company of some of the world’s finest viola da gamba players.
That recording won’t be what you hear at Ooh là là! — but it tells you something about the depth of Baroque knowledge behind the musician you will.
At the Albury Chamber Music Festival, Shaun joins Limestone Consort on theorbo, bringing one of the Baroque era’s most distinctive instruments into our French-inspired weekend.
If you’ve never seen a theorbo up close before, you’re in for a treat. 🇫🇷

🇫🇷 From Dean Street to the Côte d’Azur…
For most of the year, Albury’s Regent Cinema is where we go to see stories on the big screen.
For one rather special Festival hour this November, we’re borrowing a little of that cinematic magic for ourselves.
The beautiful heritage-listed Regent becomes our Théâtre Lumière in Cannes as we take a trip to the Riviera of the Côte d’Azur with Australian theatre and opera director Stuart Maunder.
There’ll be no film this time.
Instead, settle into the cinema and hear the stories from someone who has spent a lifetime behind the curtain — the performers, the productions, the triumphs, the mishaps, and what really happens when a director brings an operatic stage to life.
It’s one of the things we love about the Albury Chamber Music Festival: extraordinary music, fascinating people — and some rather wonderful places in which to meet them.
For an hour, at least, Dean Street is going to feel a little closer to Cannes. 🇫🇷🎬

🇫🇷 The Festival Gala | Elegant. Cheeky. Completely unpredictable.
There are Gala dinners.
And then there is the Albury Chamber Music Festival Gala.
Yes, there will be bubbles.
Yes, there will be delicious food.
Yes, there will be beautiful music.
But there may also be parlour games, competitions, saucy jokes, spontaneous musical conversations, ridiculous little surprises and — if previous years are anything to go by — possibly even the occasional unexpected animal wandering through.
It is elegant, but never stiff.
A little glamorous. A little mischievous.
Very can-can. Very Ooh là là!.
The musicians are part of the fun too. The formal concert stage gives way to something more relaxed and conversational, with artists and audience sharing the room, the jokes, the music and whatever strange turn the evening happens to take.
It is one of those Festival traditions that is almost impossible to explain properly until you’ve experienced it — and we’re not sure there is another chamber music festival quite like it.

Artist Spotlight | Gemma Tong
The harp may be one of the most beautiful instruments to look at — but for Gemma Tong, its possibilities go well beyond the ethereal.
A Melbourne-based harpist originally from Sydney, Gemma is particularly drawn to chamber music and collaboration, exploring the remarkable range of colours and textures the harp can bring to an ensemble. Her recent work has even included Harpedelique, an ensemble of amplified harps pushing the instrument into bold, contemporary and cinematic territory.
Gemma completed her Bachelor of Music (Honours) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, studying with Dr Jacinta Dennett, and was twice awarded the Corrina D’Hage Mayer String Scholarship as well as the Cassidy Bequest Scholarship. She has performed with ensembles including the Australian Youth Orchestra, Melbourne Opera and Zelman Symphony, and is also the harp teacher at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School.
This November, Gemma brings that extraordinary palette of sound to Ooh là là! — and really, could our little journey to France be complete without a harp? 🇫🇷
